MANDELA: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) – My rating: 9/10

Mandela_LongWalkToFreedomI’ve seen many movies depicting Nelson Mandela’s long, renowned struggle for equally and the end of Apartheid in South Africa.  I thought this chronicle was going to be more of the same.  I was very happy to see Mandela’s history from early childhood all the way to his inauguration as President of the nation he loved so much, which included his 27 years stay in prison.   How Mandela went from a peaceful freedom fighter to a lifer was well documented in this story of peace, violence, love and hate.  We were taken through the Winnie Mandela  innocent years into her transformation to a leader of the people who stood for violence. It was amazing to see how Mandela dealt with the hopelessness and despair he was faced with on a daily basis for 27 years.  Edris Elba surprisingly portrayed an excellent Nelson Mandela even though his ascent was a little shaky.  I thought this film was well done and didn’t leave out much.  By the end of the movie that hopelessness and despair was replaced by love and hope.  Very well done.  Edris is up for a Golden Globe award for best actor and may get an Oscar nod as well.

[Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is nominated for Achievement in Music Written for Motion pictures (Original Song)]
