LOVE AND MONSTERS (2020) – My rating: 7.5/10

Love and Monsters is a monster adventure directed by Michael Matthews, with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen serving as producers. “‘Love and Monsters” is about a teenage boy who falls in love with his schoolmate when an invasion of monsters destroys most of humanity, causing them to take refuge miles apart from each other.  This movie takes you on a young adult journey that is a little childish at times but full of action, danger, and is very exciting with a few valuable messages for all.

After the destruction of an asteroid headed for Earth, the chemical fallout resulted in all cold-blooded animals mutating into large monsters, causing an apocalypse that killed off most of humanity.  Cold Blooded Animals: all reptiles, including snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, alligators, and crocodiles, some insects such as the busy dragonflies and bees, amphibians such as frogs, toads, and salamanders, as well as fish, including sharks, are all cold-blooded animals.

During the evacuation of Fairfield, California where Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien) lived with his parents Mr. Dawson (Andrew Buchanan) and Mrs. Dawson (Tandi Wright), is separated from his girlfriend who is the love of his life,  Aimee (Jessica Henwick). Joel promises to find her once they have relocated and are safe. Seven years later, Joel lives in one of many underground bunkers called “colonies”, where other survivors, except for him, have romantically paired up with each other while fighting monsters and scavenging for supplies. Joel instead is left behind to cook for his colony, as he is notorious for freezing in dangerous situations. When a giant ant breaches his colony, killing one of the colony members, Joel sets off on a quest to reunite with Aimee so that he doesn’t end up alone. No one thought Joel leaving was a good idea. They also thought he wouldn’t last 24 hours.

Passing through the suburbs, Joel is attacked by a giant toad monster but is saved by a stray dog named “Boy“, who follows Joel on his journey, warning him against poisonous berries and other dangers. Joel falls into a nest of worm-monsters called “Sand-Gobblers”, when two survivors, Clyde Dutton (Michael Rooker) and Minnow (Ariana Greenblatt), rescue him. They are heading north to the mountains, where the colder weather and higher elevation mean fewer monsters. They teach Joel some basic survival skills, and how not all monsters are hostile, demonstrating  (how “You can always tell in their eyes”. They invite Joel to stay with them, but Joel insists that he must find Aimee. As they part ways, Clyde gifts Joel with a grenade.

Love and Monsters ended up being quite entertaining.  Joel’s journey proves to be worthwhile and anything but easy.  I tried to imagine if such a phenomenon could ever really happen and if it did, who would be brave enough or physically able to survive.  The special effects are outstanding, the acting is brilliant, and the cinematography is exceptional.  I recommend Love and Monsters to all age groups, it was very entertaining.  In its debut weekend, Love and Monsters was the number one most rented film on FandangoNow and Apple TV.  On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 92% based on 77 reviews, with an average rating of 7.30/10. The website’s critic’s consensus reads: “Led by a charming star turn from Dylan O’Brien, Love and Monsters peers into the apocalypse and finds an action-adventure with surprising emotional depth.” Love and Monsters is streaming on Apple TV+ — Check It Out!
