FREE GUY (2021) – My rating: 7.5/10

Free Guy is a science fiction action thriller directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. The story was also written by Matt Lieberman. This film follows a bank teller who thinks he lives in paradise.  Eventually, he discovers he’s actually a non-player character in an open-world video game. Actually, the trailers drew me to the story when I heard him say he was living in the perfect world.  The film was definitely a feel-good movie.

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a non-player character (NPC) in Free City, an open-world video game developed by the  Soonami Games family. Unaware that the world he lives in is a video game, he works as a bank teller alongside his best friend who is the bank’s security guard Buddy (Lil “Rel” Howery). In the real world, Millie Rusk (Jodie Comer), who plays Molotov Girl in the game, tries to find evidence of being the rightful owner of the source code, which was stolen by head developer Antwan Hovachelik (Taika Waititi), while co-developer Walter “Keys” McKeys (Joe Keery) was also in Soonami’s employment. In the game, Molotov Girl catches Guy’s attention by singing his favorite song, and he begins to deviate from his programming. Taking a pair of sunglasses from a player robbing the bank, Guy sees Free City through the player’s heads-up display (HUD) and tries to catch up with Molotov Girl. Guy becomes the hero of the story while trying to save his friends from deletion by the game’s creator.

Free Guy is about a very happy guy who thinks he’s living the good life.  He describes his world as a paradise.  He has a best friend, a cushy bank job, and loves his coffee.  The only thing missing is the perfect girl to share his life with.  He doesn’t want anyone less. Of course, he finds that girl but has to be told he’s not real but instead a character they have now labeled “Blue Shirt”.  On top of that, he has to save his world from deletion.  As you can see, the story is pretty good and with Ryan Reynold’s at the helm, you know the acting is going to be excellent.  At first, I thought Free Guy was a little silly but as I got into the film my opinion changed.  I actually thought Free Guy was brilliantly written and acted. I haven’t begun to reveal the whole story which gets pretty intense and may not appeal to an elderly crowd.  As of October 17, 2021, Free Guy has grossed $120.8 million in the United States and Canada, and $207.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $328.6 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of 2021. It has received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the clever concept and compared it favorably to a combination of science fiction films and action video games such as Ready Player One, The Truman Show, The Matrix, Grand Theft Auto, and Fortnite. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 80% based on 277 reviews, with an average rating of 7.00/10. The website’s critics consensus reads, “Combining a clever concept, sweet, self-aware humor, and a charming cast, Free Guy is frivolous fun.”  Free Guy is in theaters and is streaming on Prime Video for $5.99 if you’re a Prime member.  Check It Out!
