CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? (2018) – My rating: 9/10

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a biographical film directed by Marielle Heller.  The screenplay is by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty, based on Lee Israel’s 2008 memoir of the same name. Can You Ever Forgive Me? tells the true story of a writer who has fallen on hard times and turns to illegal methods of making ends meet.   This movie has flown way under the radar, as it appears to have been looked on as the book Lee Israel wrote in the movie.  I’m so glad I got to see Can You Ever Forgive Me? it’s truly a block buster in it’s own right.

**** SOME SPOILERS ****

Following the critical and commercial failure of her biography of Estée Lauder, author Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) is struggling with financial troubles, writer’s block and alcoholism. Because her agent Marjorie (Jane Curtain), is unable to secure Lee with an advance for a new biography, she is forced to find another way to make money.  Lee lugs a ton of heavy books to a pawn shop for books but can only get $2.00 and some nasty attitude for all her effort.  Further, her beloved cat is sick and needs medication.  Lee decides to sell a personal letter she received from Katharine Hepburn to Anna (Dolly Wells), a local book dealer in order to cover her expenses.

While at the library conducting research about Fanny Brice, for a novel she’s planning to write, Lee happens upon an actual letter from Ms. Brice folded in the book. She swipes the letter and offers to sell it to Anna, who can’t give much due to the letter’s lack of interesting content. That’s when Lee begins to forge and sell letters by deceased writers, playwrights and actors, by embellishing them with juicy,  intimate details that command a higher price. Anna, who is a fan of Lee’s writing as an author, attempts to initiate a relationship with her. Lee being very private and unfriendly most of the time, rejects the relationship with Anna.

When one of Lee’s letters written by Noël Coward raises suspicion for its unguarded discussion of his sexuality, she is blacklisted by her buyers. Unable to sell the forgeries herself, she has her new best friend, Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant) sell the letters for her. While Lee was away attempting to enhance her forgery business, she trusted Jack to take care of her apartment and her cat. Upon her return, she ends their relationship after finding her apartment trashed and her cat dead.  Later Jack and Lee are served with a court summons by the FBI for forgery.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is based on a true story and presents a nice change and a nice rest from all the action movies.  There are times when you think Lee is going to do something predictable, then surprised when she does something totally opposite.  Although I’ve told much of the story, I’ve also left out much of the story.  Melissa McCarthy has given a fantastic performance if not her best performance.  She is completely believable and convincing as the writer, Lee Israel.  Richard E. Grant was absolutely brilliant as Jack Hock, a friendly gay man with a secret.  I  was thoroughly entertained and learned a thing or two about the world of authentic letter buying.  For me, this movie is what going to the movies is all about.  Excellent story — Brilliant acting — Check It Out!

THE SLAP – My rating: 7/10

TheSlapThe Slap has an impressive cast but doesn’t appear to have the potential for a long story line.  In fact, it’s an American mini series, based on an Australian adaptation of the same name.  So far, only the pilot has aired so there’s not a whole lot to report on, regarding the quality of the series.  I found some parts of this story quite repulsive.  An unruly 5 year old brat at a family, birthday barbeque is pulling up the hostess’s garden, destroying classic vinyl records, refusing to acknowledge he’s been called out after the 3rd strike in a softball game and the worst of all, being breast fed by his mom Rosie (Melissa George) every time he gets out of order.  Hugo’s father, Gary (Thomas Sadoski) observes but does nothing.  The slap was caused when Hugo repeatedly kicked an adult, Harry (Zachary Quinto) in the shins because Harry was trying to discipline Hugo as he swung a bat at the other children.  I must say, the whole scene brought up plenty emotions.  It’s hard to sit there and not have any input however, it’s only a TV series.  In the meanwhile, the star couple, 39 year old Hector Apostolou (Peter Sarsgaard) and Aisha Apostolou (Thandie Newton) are having a 40th birthday for Hector and Hector is obsessing over his under aged children’s baby sitter, Connie (Makenzie Leigh).  In pops Anouk (Uma Thurman), with a very young date and observes Hector having a private moment with Connie.  There’s lots going on in this series, including the fact that Harry is a cocky hot head.  I have mixed feelings about The Slap — I hope it’s gets better because other than the slap, I found it a tad boring with a lot of the same old scenarios, like Hector’s mid life crisis.  Dylan Schombing brilliantly plays Hugo, the 5 year old, undisciplined child.  The Slap airs on NBC and is a tolerable mini series that will run for 8 episodes.

MISTRESSES – My rating: 6/10

MistressesI feel somewhat reluctant critiquing Mistresses because I’m not certain it’s going to be renewed.  I understand the British version is a big hit, but that’s in England.  In the US it’s considered just okay.  In my opinion the plot is a little ridiculous.  Mistresses is a drama about the scandalous lives of four girlfriends.

Savi (Alyssa Milano), a successful lawyer is married to Harry (Brett Tucker), a restaurant owner and chef.  They want to start a family (he more than she). Savi ends up having a one night stand with Dominic, a lawyer on her job, played by Jason George .  She becomes pregnant to her husband’s delight but has to come clean since the father in unknown and the baby could be black.

Season 2:  Savi’s baby problem is resolved since she was in a horrific car accident in last season’s finale, causing a miscarriage.  She divorces her husband anyway, in favor of her baby daddy. For the record, Savi seems very uncomfortable in this relationship — the chemistry is just not there.

Josselyn (Jes Macallan), Savi’s younger sister is a savvy real estate agent and a single, serial dater who strikes up a love relationship with a female client. Josselyn ends up sleeping with her French boss, causing her current gay relationship to come to an end. Additionally, Josselyn is wild and loves to party.

Season 2:  Josselyn is no longer a real estate agent.  She along with her sister’s x-husband, Harry, are party planners, complete with catering.  For the record, this is an unlikely pairing since Harry will be constantly running into his X, plus he’s a professional.

April (Rochelle Aytes), an entrepreneurial, store owner is a  recent widow with a young daughter.  April seems to be the only normal one in the group until her dead husband reappears, complete with a mistress and child, clamming blackmail as the reason he faked his death.  April is currently dating and now has to figure out what to do going forward.

Season 2:  April has met someone new and is throwing her prudish ways out the window to enjoy lots of sex with her new hunk.  For the record, no mention of her resurfaced, dead husband.  Life goes on as usual.  I think they replaced the person playing her daughter.

Karen (Yunjin Kim), a successful therapist with her own practice, has an affair with her dying, married client, Thomas Grey (John Schneider).  After many complications, Karen ends up sleeping with Sam Grey, Thomas’s son.  If matters weren’t bad enough, Thomas’s wife fines out and has Karen arrested for aiding in her husbands death, which she did not do.

Season 2:  Karen no longer has a private practice since Sam got killed and his mother was arrested for the murder.  For the record, this story is pretty gray since there was a struggle at the end of last season, between Sam and Karen and Sam’s mother when the gun went off.  It seems odd that anyone was arrested for this accident/incident.  There was no motive for killing Sam.

Mistresses aired for 13 weeks in June of 2013.  I just learned Mistresses has been picked up for a second season and will air June of 2014.  I don’t know how they will resolve Sevi’s potential baby daddy, Jason George, since he also plays Dr. Bailey’s husband on Grey’s Anatomy.  He was away for a while but has returned.  It’s unrealistic to think 4 friends have this kind of life or maybe I’m the one that’s out of touch.  Mistresses airs on ABC.

Season 2:  Still unrealistic and has started off rushed with most of the characters emotionally detached. For the record, I will be surprised if Mistresses makes it a 3rd season.  Only time will tell.
