Red Dot is a Swedish drama as well as a thriller written by Alain Darborg and Per Dickson and directed by Alain Darborg. The film follows a couple who takes a trip to see the Northern lights while trying to rekindle their relationship. In the trailer, the red dots that were pointed on the couple’s chest and the drama surrounding them intrigued me to watch this movie. I never saw what was coming. Well done, although I did not like the way Darborg and Dickson choose to end the film.
Red Dot opens in the university cafeteria just after David’s (Anastasios Soulis) graduation ceremony. He tries to surprise his girlfriend Nadja (Nanna Blondell), by publicly proposing to her, which she happily accepts. A year and a half later, however, they are stressed due to work and school and fight frequently in their Stockholm apartment. The stress is compounded when Nadja learns she is pregnant, which she is unhappy about as she is studying to be a doctor and is not sure if she and David should be parents. Nadja opens up to an older neighbor, Thomas (Thomas Hanzon), and he assures her that she and David will be great parents; he insists that parenthood is life’s greatest gifts and implies he has lost a child of his own. The next morning, David surprises Nadja with reservations to a camping trip to see the northern lights. Excited, they reconcile but take their dog, Boris on the trip.
As the film progresses, it’s clear to see the immatureness of the couple which might suggest that Nadja is right, about the two of them not, being ready to be parents. So you might wonder how they go from a fun trip to being targeted in the north of Sweden in the freezing cold. You’ll have to see this intriguing movie to find out more as I can’t say anything else as not to spoil all the surprises that are coming. What I will warn you of, is the unexplainable ending. To Recap: When David and Nadja meet, marry and settle down, they find that they are not as compatible as they thought. They make a decision to travel, hoping to rekindle their relationship, they get themselves into a dangerous situation that they caused themselves. On both sides (the pursuer and the pursued), their solutions are downright dumb. For a couple that is so highly educated, I’m not sure why they made so many blunders. This may be due to poor scriptwriting. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 67% of 9 critics gave the film a positive review. Red Dot is streaming on Netflix — Check It Out!
