JINGLE JANGLE: A Christmas Journey (2020) – My rating: 7.5/10

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is a Christmas musical fantasy film written and directed by David E. Talbert. I was a little reluctant to see this movie because it appeared to be a children’s film.  I was correct — albeit a children’s film, it was an exceptional children’s film.

An eccentric toymaker named Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) and his adventurous granddaughter Journey (Madalen Mills), construct a magical invention in this imaginary world which, if they can get it to work in time for the holidays, could change Jeronicus and his family’s lives forever.

Jeronicus employs an apprentice named Gustafson (Keegan-Michael Key) who betrays the toymaker along with a new toy called Don Juan Diego (voice: Ricky Martin), causing Jeronicus to lose his ability to believe in himself and to also mistrust anyone who comes into his presence, for years to come.  Meanwhile, a magical invention called Buddy 3000 (voice: David E. Talbert) has the power to change all their lives.

I found Jingle Jangle to be a little slow but interesting.  Forest Whitaker,  Lisa Davina Phillip (who plays Ms. Johnston), and Madalen Mills’ talents are unending and brilliant.  I had no idea Forest could sing, he held his own and delivered a top-notch performance.  The musical numbers were “music to my ears”, as I loved the words and the melodies.  The style of dancing didn’t match the time period but was the “creme de la creme” anyway, which brought some humor into the production.  I also loved the fashionable costumes. The designs and colors were fabulous.  So far, IMDB has rated Jingle Jangle 6.9 out of 10.  Parts of this production reminded me of Hamilton but is no real comparison. THE LION KING (2019) – My rating: 9/10

The Lion King is a computer-animated musical directed and produced by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. The plot follows Simba, a young lion who must embrace his role as the rightful king of his native land following the murder of his father, Mufasa, at the hands of his uncle, Scar. As with Jungle Book, the CGI characters were spectacular.  There was very little difference in the story, if any, from the original 1994 animated film. I was glad I went to see Lion King in this format.

In the Pride Lands of Africa, in a place called Pride Rock, lived King Mufasa, Queen Sarabi and their pride of lions who ruled over the animal kingdom. Mufasa’s and Sarabi’s newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki, the mandrill who is the kingdom’s shaman and advisor. As Simba grows older, Mufasa shows him the Pride Lands and explains the responsibilities of kingship as well as the “circle of life”, which connects all living things.

Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba so he can rule the kingdom,  as the new king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom it is expected Simba will marry) into exploring a forbidden elephants’ graveyard, where they are attacked by spotted hyenas led by Shenzi, Kamari, and Azizi. Mufasa is alerted about the incident by his majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba. Meanwhile, Scar visits the hyenas and manages to convince them to help him overthrow Mufasa in exchange for hunting rights in the Pride Lands.

Meanwhile, Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. In order for Scar’s plan to work, he informs Mufasa of Simba’s peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son.

The Lion King is a classic that most people have seen.  The reason to see this version is the CGI technology that makes the environment and animals of The Lion King seem almost real.  In this version, the plot focuses more on the life of Simba rather than his father, Mufasa.  Simba runs into new and different characters and learns new and different ways to eat and survive.  When Simba was finally pulled back into his reality, he resisted but succumbed to his basic foundation, which included the teachings of his father.  I thought The Lion King was beautifully told with special effects that were out of this world.  I am excited about future endeavors pertaining to picture shows.  The Lion King has grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing animated film, overtaking Frozen, as well as the second highest-grossing film of 2019 and 9th highest of all-time. It received mixed reviews, with praise for its visual effects, music, and vocal performances (particularly Rogen and Eichner) but criticism for its lack of facial emotion on the characters, with many describing it as “soulless” compared to the original film. I think, without a doubt, The Lion King is definitely worth seeing on the big screen.  Check It Out!

THE PREDATOR (2018) – My rating: 8/10

The Predator is a science fiction action film directed by Shane Black and written by Black and Fred Dekker. It is the fourth installment in the Predator film series (the sixth counting the two Alien vs. Predator films), following Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990), and Predators (2010). Black had a supporting role in the original film, while John Davis returns as producer from the first three installments. The Predator follows a group of PTSD-afflicted soldiers who’s mission is to destroy a pair of alien Predators.  This is not a film I wanted to see but after sitting through it, I decided it was pretty entertaining and even exciting.

** SLIGHT SPOILERS **

A Predator ship crash-lands on Earth. Army Ranger and Sniper, Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) and his team are attacked by a Predator while on a hostage retrieval mission. Quinn incapacitates the Predator (Brian A. Prince) and has its armor mailed to his estranged wife, Emily McKinna (Yvonne Strahovski) and son, Rory McKenna (Jacob Tremblay).  At the behest of government agent Will Traeger (Sterling K. Brown), Quinn is captured and interrogated while Traeger sends the captured Predator to a lab for experimentation and observation. Evolutionary biologist Casey Bracket (Olivia Munn) is tasked by Traeger to study the captive alien. As Casey was conducting test, the Predator awakens, breaks out of its bonds, kills the lab workers, but spares Bracket before leaving.  Meanwhile, Quinn, along with a group of other government captives, including ex-Marine Gaylord “Nebraska” Williams (Trevante Rhodes), a military veteran named Coyle (Keegan-Michael Key), a military veteran from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder named Baxley (Thomas Jane), a helicopter pilot named Nettles (Augusto Aguilera), and Lynch (Alfie Allen), another ex-Marine is bussed out to the military base where the Predator is held captive. As the bus arrives, they witness the Predator escaping from the lab, thus proving his existence to all.  Instinctively, Quinn and the rest of the crew take over the bus and commence fighting off the Predator.  Taking Bracket with them, they head over to Quinn’s estranged wife, Emily, where he expects to find the Predator’s armor he mailed. However, Quinn’s autistic son Rory has gone trick-or-treating while wearing this armor, in hopes of avoiding detection from bullies.

Of course The Predator gets more and more interesting.  There are Predator Dogs, big Predators and small Predators, just to name a few of the surprise scenarios.  I thought this was one of the better Predator films given where we are technically and scientifically.   The acting was brilliant and the adventure had lots of little twist.  The plot made as much sense as it could, considering the fact that this is a science fiction movie — they can make up anything they desire, but  it has to be believable to us.  I’m not sure about this one, you’ll have to see it for yourself to determine whether or not the story is  believable. the story.  I liked it, so I recommend it — check it out!

 

KEANU (2016) – My rating: 7/10

I thought Keanu was going to be one of those silly, slap stick comedies with two guys I had never heard of until recently.  I’m happy to report Keanu wasn’t that bad and even had quite a few very funny moments.  This comedy is about two nerdy cousins who go beyond the call of duty to recover a kitten.   Keegan Michael-Key plays Clarence Goobrie, Smoke Dresden and Shark Tank while his cousin Jordan Peele plays Rell Williams, Oil Dresden, and Tectonic. Clarence is married to very sexy young lady named Hannah (Mia Long) and has a daughter.  Rell, who is sort of a weed head, just broke up with his girlfriend and lost his job.  Rell’s weed supplier Hulka (Will Forte) lives next door and supplies endless information throughout the movie.  The plot is a little convoluted as the two men get together thinking that Clarence is going to cheer up the down and out Rell.  However, before Clarence arrives at Rell’s apartment, the most adorable kitten you’ve ever laid your eyes on comes scratching at his door.  When Rell opens the door and lays eyes on the kitten, he instantly cheers up, names the kitten Keanu and completely falls in love with him.  When Clarence arrives, Rell is chipper and introduces Keanu to him with a full heart.  So where did this adorable kitten come from in the first place?  That is the opening of this movie, which will explain the names Smoke and Oil Dresden and the Kitten.  As time moves on, Keanu is stolen, and Clarence and Rell have to go undercover to get him back.  They end up posing as “The Allentown Boys”, who are responsible for a big drug robbery and massacre earlier in the week.  Teamed up with a dangerous gang banging crew under the names Shark Tank and Tectonic, they befriend Hi-C (Tiffany Haddish), Cheddar (Method Man), Trunk (Darrell Britt-Gibson), Bud (Jason Michell) and Stitches (Jamar Malachi Neighbors) in order to convince Cheddar, who now possesses Keanu, that he should turn the kitten over to them.  Apparently, everyone who comes in contact with the kitten, falls head over heels in love with it and will do anything to keep it.  The movie has some very funny scenes and is so different, you won’t see what’s coming.  I enjoyed it as I was pleasantly surprised.  Luis Guzman played a cartel boss near the end of the movie that was really one of the biggest twist of all.  There are lots and lots of crazy in Keanu!  BTW:  Keanu Reeves is the voice of Keanu, the kitten.
